Sourthernism is also usually about self reliance and being happy with what nature provides. Which is not blind consumerism.

Country music these days is largely copying pop/rock. And last I heard people were calling it "Simp country" because of the woman worshiping in it.

Men today don't all want to be told to be white knights, to openly unfairful women. As some exclaim "chivalry is dead and women killed it."

So country music and southernism is in a bad place. Not to mention many want to call the southern flag a hate symbol.

Southern culture has its shortcomings, which others can expound upon. But at its best, Southern culture is marked by hospitality toward outsiders, manners ("yes, sir", "no, sir", "yes, ma'am", "no, ma'am", "please", and "thank you"), funny idioms usually involving animals, storytelling, good music…

Southern culture can be kinda crass or rough around the edges.

Thing is, even among southerners, some have internalized southern accent as you sound less intelligent as well as closing doors for yourself in the world.

When as a child I was trying to learn a southern accent. I would be told "Your too smart for that", "I raised you better than this." by my family.

I can go places here where people have an accent so thick I've no idea what they are saying. But they are very rare. Like I encounter them maybe a couple of times in a life time.

I do think some states are more welcoming to the southern accent. But none that I've been to or recall were really, majority speaking it.

I can't say I lived in the South, but I can appreciate the culture. I grew up around Midwest rednecks.

As an addendum to my previous post, I really should say Southern cultures. Tennessee hillbillies, Louisiana Cajuns, and Texas cowboys are all completely different. They just get lumped together, because they all fought on the wrong side of that bloody war that's such a big fuckin' deal. That said, these cultures do share some commonalities - agrarian roots for instance.

I've traveled around a bit.

I've been to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, and all the way across to California.

They all have their own cultures, and they don't necessarily follow the stereotypes.

Me and my little Fiero went places. Although now its retired, blown header and all. It was a good girl.

The only states I haven't been to are Alaska, Hawaii, and Rhode Island.

I'll get there eventually though.

The states were pretty clear about why they left the union. They literally wrote it down when they declared they were betraying and leaving America.
