22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
What does it mean? These are important verses, as they lay the groundwork for separation of church and state. Christians are commanded to fulfill their duties to both the state and God. Jesus sees no contradiction. He is explicitly stating to pay tax.
But what is an example of rendering unto God? If you spot a wild animal in the road, to whom does it belong? We cannot allow the sacrifice of God's creatures on Caesar's altar. Deus vult!
