Is it even a separate animation? It looks just like a walkcycle but the sprite is moving upwards.

I think the run cycle while airborne is more jarring. A small jumping animation, or just a different pose while airborne may make those feel less stiff.

One of my favorite old-time sprite animations was from the game Flashback. For it's time it did animation better than many games do today. All actions looked like they had weight and momentum. Jumping involved bending down and swinging arms, arching the body, and bending down once again upon landing to absorb the fall. Running involved a brief transition from a walking gait to a running gate. When going from a run to a stop the character braces himself and uses his legs and arms to absorb the forward momentum.

One drawback was that the character had a limited number of fixed positions he could stand. You couldn't just nudge him one or two pixels. It was if he was on a sidewalk and had to stand exactly in the middle of each sidewalk block and couldn't stand near the edge of one or on a crack.

The sprite animation looks stiff.

Check out how Capcom animated X in this sheet. Notice how his arms and legs swing dramatically with every step. He appears to launch himself forward with every step, and it gives a strong sense of momentum when seen in action.

Your character's arms and legs barely move, and it gives the sense that she's lightly jogging around at high speed. You also need to add an extra animation for the double jump. That will help broadcast to the player that they've successfully performed the action.

I'm not sure what's up with her tail disappearing when climbing those stairs, and why that animation only triggers on that one set of stairs and not the others.

I don't know about that placement of the sword (I assume that's the currently equipped weapon). Mid-screen seems likely to be a really important part of the play area, and it's covering a significant portion of it; you see it cover the character at one point, and it's really close to her when she's moving left. I'd expect that normally to be in one of the upper corners next to the other stuff. IMO the current stuff in the upper corners could be smaller (the bag could just be smaller, and the scroll(?) could be shoved offscreen further until it's "pulled down" or whatever).

I'm curious what happens when you run out of air; instant death or losing health?

I enjoy the tile work you've been doing. One recommendation I would make if I can is to make the characters a bit cleaner and simpler in their design, limit the number of colors/shades used and make better use of saturated colors / spot colors so that the characters stand out better from the background.

alternatively you could do what the later castlevania games did and give everyone an eye bleeding border or motion blur effect

redesign the main character at this point would be to much work beside i kinda like her design to be honest :V
