So I just saw this bit of news via Steam - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKHjcnOGPhs

Pic related, and I really hope the new musical score stays largely true to the original 16-bit version, like the opening theme did. I also have to wonder whether some of the content that got cut in the original release might get expanded on with this one.

I mean...they are more than capable....SOMEBODY else out there has to hate that rainbow shit.

I think it started to really take over somewhere around the psx era, becuase the super nintendo had plenty of darker themed rpgs in japan, mostky the shen megami line of games tho.

Except it's based on the original designs. And what game are you citing with those manual screenshots?

Just to point out - Secret of Mana came out in '93, and took visual cues from other 16-bit games like Link to the Past and Chrono Trigger.

VA is horrible. Graphics lost all the charm of the original and are flat out offensive. Only good thing I can see coming from this is What the Forest Taught me being good if it's orchestral but even that would lose a lot of it's charm. Maybe there will be a small chance for more gaping flammie cloaca or Chobin Hood smut.

Would not buy.

I don't know, I'm not too bugged by the VA after listening to some on the site for it - though if it makes you feel better, there's going to be an option to hear it in Japanese, so you won't have to put up with the English one if you don't want to.

The preorder bonuses bug me a bit, though, since they could do gangbusters by offering up the OST instead of the cosmetic stuff.

I mean, the character models are the same generic ugly 3d garbage I've seen for a decade or more now. I can't forgive them for not taking a risk and doing something with beautiful prerendered forest backgrounds... It could have been full of meadows, willo-whisps, and calming foliage. The entire atmosphere of the game is lost. 16-bit could capture it, it doesn't translate well into this overly warm and simplified shit.

It all feels wrong but maybe I'm just being a nostalgia retard and haven't seen enough of it outside of the teaser, if they fuck up the Chobin Hood models I'll neck myself though.

Chrono Trigger came out in '95 and uses a lot of trashed concepts from SoM that were cut when the SNES-CD project imploded.

Huh, never knew that. I didn't play Chrono Trigger until the CD got released for PS-1 in a bundle with FFIV.

Anime/Japanese art in general has gotten worse over the years. This isn't close to the standard anymore, now it's triangle noses, saucer eyes and all girls that look like they're 9 years old with tits glued on.

>Steam

I'd point out you won't actually own a copy of the game you pay for but fuck it, none of oyu give a shit about that anymore. If you did you'd buy DRM-free physical copies instead of letting publishers assfuck you. Right, furries and conservatives, you like to be assfucked.

The game also looks a couple gens behind and will probably be super rushed. Expect the soundtrack to be a half-assed synth remix instead of orchestrated. Then if/when the game doesn't sell to expectations(which will be SUPER high) they'll cancel all future remakes and cite the fans as the sole reason why.

For what it's worth, I insist on owning copies of nearly every game I have, save for certain titles on dead systems/PC formats that I don't have much interest in possessing/adapting.
Off the top of my head, those comprise the early games in the Wing Commander series and some titles like Ogre Battle: The Prince of Zenobia or Bahamut Lagoon (which are never coming to the U.S. anyway so fuckit).
Anything going back to the Atari 2600 I'll buy if I really want it, so yeah, there are people like me out there who are using Steam pretty much just as a way to play some indie games and document inconsequential progress/stats on games we own, and to replay some games (read: Skyrim) that we own on console.

I'd like to think this game will work out - the story, script, play style, score, monster designs...everything is already there. Development should be relatively inexpensive, and while the voice acting is probably going to be crap, Square's had some pretty good remakes, like FFIII & IV DS. Secret of Mana could be okay.

And there's one major aspect I'm looking forward to - expanded translation. According to Ted Woolsey (http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/localization/localization.htm), he was given 30 days to translate it from Japanese.
Emphasis added.
Even when Japan-centric titles make the journey west, there is huge amount of work, as shown in Atlus' fascinating production diaries. There are also difficulties. In the 16-bit era it was non-contiguous text and a lack of ROM space, as Woolsey recounts for Secret of Mana, "Probably 40 percent or more of the text was nuked - there just wasn't space. Story elements, nuance and personality had to be stripped out. It was, in some ways, the hardest game I'd worked on. I loved that game, but am probably most dissatisfied with the result. I was there for over a month, and the screen text was being modified every day. Certainly tried my best, but that thing nearly killed me."

So if they fix that aspect of things, this could be well-worth buying, even at a $40 price point.

They also had to massively compress down the translation to fit into the cart space and work around the oversized fixed-width font. Fan translations have done better but they had free reign to expand the file size beyond hardware limits and tinker with the code for a few years.
