It's based on the types of people the fandom tends to attract into today's world.
A long time ago it mostly attracted people into beastiality, And geeky nerdy types who just liked the anthro idea.
Over time the fandom become more well known, and started attracting other types, in specific two types that make a great majority of the bleeding vaginas.
Gays, and socially insecure people. As well as the cross, of socially insecure gay people.
I'm being serious on that.
Now why would these types be attracted to the fandom?
The social insecurities like it because there's nothing stopping them from getting into it. There is no requirement, no needed skill, nothing to filter out these bottom of the barrel human beings from joining. Unlike many other fetishes and fandoms where you actually need to like something very specific, or be capable of certain acts. Furry has NO REQUIREMENTS.
No why the gays?
Gay rights, and Gays being openly accepted is still in all reality a very new thing. It's not even a full generation old yet. All these gay people that are in a transition period of acceptance are still facing a lot of discrimination. The fandom is not known for discrimination, so it attracts those looking for acceptance. Such as the gays. (and lets face it, with how sexual the fandom is becoming, it's attracting more people looking for sex and nothing more, I'm not lying when I say I've met about 30+ gay furries who joined mostly due to sexual reasons. (most of these gay furries joined saying it was internet only, then just became full blown furfaggots)
And, The fandom is not hard to get into. It has a little bit of everything for everybody now due to the vast majority of interests from the people in the fandom. This helps in attracting even more people. Plus it's not hard to get used to the anthro stuff, especially if your insecure.
Most of us really enjoyed the talking animals in cartoons as a kid, or the tv shows where all the characters are furry.
As long as children's TV shows continue to feature talking animals, and characters that are basically furry, then the fandom will continue to grow.
